Christie’s curated "Bound to Fail" auction includes 39 works of art for a total estimated valuation (*) of $56 million. While the number or works is larger than that of last year’s "Looking Forward to the Past" (39 versus 35 last year), the total estimated valuation (*) is much smaller ($56 million versus $253 million).
One should note that the curated auction only includes 4 works with a LE higher than $3 million (versus 20 last year) while the majority of lots (22 lots out of 39) have a LE of less than $1 million (versus 6 last year).
Interestingly the star lots "One Ball Total Equilibrium Tank" by Jeff Koons – with an estimate upon request - and "Him" by Maurizio Cattelan – with an estimate of $10 to $15 million - are positioned deep in the auction, respectively # 21 and #39 (last lot).
Finally only 10 out of 39 works (25%) feature a guarantee, all with irrevocable bids – a far cry from last year when 19 out of 35 works (54 %) were covered by guarantees including 9 works without an irrevocable bid.
